October 1971

October 1, 1971
I was in a very good mood today again. Well, it looks like Mark is gone, he didn't come to school today - so. I didn't do anything in Literature this last month but I had to do something so I took the test - I'm probably the only one. I probably got an F. We also had 2 geometry classes today - bore bore (because E.D. came yesterday). In Biology me and Donna were supposed to put a DNA molecule together, well, we got an RNA instead. Maybe next week we'll get a DNA.

David didn't call all week and Sue said he was mad because we ditched him. So I'll have to send his ring back. I went to Arvie's tonight and I asked Mike if he thought Steven liked me and he said "it looks that way." It's about time. Well, I think I'll sign off now. Bi.

October 2
In Church School today I had to sit by myself because everybody I knew was at another church (oh well). Michele came to church and so I sat with her. This afternoon my dad promised to take me and Sue driving. We went out to by where Steven lives and drove. It was kinda fun. When Sue was driving a sheriff started following - it was tense for her. She was very nervous. I stayed at her house and we went to her brothers and goofed off and then we went to my house and made rootbeer floats, yum, yum! We then went to the school and I lost David's ring. I don't know what I am going to do. I'll have to look for it tomorrow. We watched the movie "Bristle Face" over at the school. It was very good. Wish me luck!

October 3
I woke up at the early hour of 7:30 to go and look for David's ring. I didn't find it. So I had to write him a letter. Then I started making my poster for Biology (it looks sick) Michele and Ranele came over and they said my letter was O.K.! So I sent it. I should have studied for the Biology test tomorrow, but I just didn't feel like it. I read a stupid book all afternoon. At 7:00, I walked over to Sue's but she wasn't home. She came and picked me up at 7:30 and Kim told me I sent the letter to the wrong address. Oh groan, now I will have to write another one...We watched TV at Terry's (Sue's brother) house until 11:00. I hope my mom doesn't get too mad.

October 4
School again, ich. Cheryl came over this morning and told me that their car burned up. I could hardly believe it, I mean, it's not all that old a '68. Steven was "ill" today - I bet he ditched to get out of the Biology test. I passed the spelling test and went on to pass the Drivers Ed quiz, but I flunked the Religion quiz and the Biology test. I missed 9 out of 35 on the first round and 15 out of 35 on the second. Bad. Oh well, that's what I get for not studying. I got another great idea for a poster. Everyone says it's a good idea. So I hope so. I had to take some books back to the library and I also got some new ones. I think I'll go take my shower now and hit the sack.

October 5
I can't think of anything unusual that happened this morning. I guess that's what happens when Steven isn't here. I got 45 out of 71 on the Biology test which was considered a B. Donna got 57 so our group is the highest so far. I hope Edward gets a good grade. Oh, guess what? I got 2 letters today! One from my cousin, David and one from Mike (finally). It was a pretty good letter. Michele came over tonight and I had to help her with her Bookkeeping. WOW, did she ever need help! Then I went and got the pictures I took on Sept. 25. Most of them didn't turn out. The one of just David is really good. I can't think of anything more to say, but that I hope Steven comes to school tomorrow.

October 6
Guess who came to school today??? Steven, right. But all he could do was aggravate me all the time, and it makes me soooo mad! I got the letter I sent to David back again, and I'm not going to resend it either, that's just too bad. In P.E. today we had to run 4 laps and it made me sooo mad. Then Miss S was on the opposite team so naturally we lost. It was kinda funny so we get to play a different team tomorrow - halelujah. I had to water the law this afternoon until 6:30 because I only had one faucet to use. I fed Timmy too and studied for the four tests we're having tomorrow. I better get to bed now, so I'll be refreshed tomorrow.

October 7
School started out with tests and ended up with tests. First in English. I got 94 on capitalization, but I don't know about punctuation. I missed 8 on the Religion test - I don't know what letter grade that is, probably a B. In Bookkeeping, I really goofed the first page up and Biology, I goofed that up too. Mr. Hodges gave us our grades and how we stand with the rest of the class. So far this year, I am second in Bookkeeping which is an A and second in Biology, which is a B. I don't think that's too bad if I can keep it up. In P.E. we could take the Presidents P.E. test thingie. I tried but I only got 8.1 in the 50 yard dash and we had to have 7.3, so I gave up. After school, I swiped Steven's coat and after he left I put it back, I think he knows tho'. Then I played tennis with Donna.

October 8
The last day of school before a weekend - good. We took the Geometry test and I got 70% which is a C. Donna got 73% and that was the higest score, so I guess I did pretty well. When Steven came to school he acted mad, but after I got in the room he talked to me, so I don't know? In Biology lab, we had to put the DNA molecule together again and this time we got it right. Then we had to test some soil for phosphorus and make reports. In chapel some firemen came in with Resuca Annie, but I didn't do it. In fact none of the 10th grade did. There wasn't a meeting at Arvie's tonight. So, I just read a book.

October 9
Shock! Steven came to church today and he said Hi. His mom kept primping her hair and I almost died laughing. His dad went out and came back in 20 minutes, then Steven left but he didn't come back - he just sat in the car because I saw him. I went home with Michele for dinner - her mom wasn't feeling well, but I guess it was OK if I was there. We didn't go on singing bands today - so we went to MBA to visit Marvin (MBA is a parochial boarding school - Marvin is Michele's brother). It was kinda fun. Then we went for a walk and when we got back Michele fixed my hair like Steven's mom's hair. Michele's mother fixed it over tho' and Michele wanted her hair Kinked, so I braided it in little braids all over. It looked funny.

October 10
I had to water the lawn this morning. I also straightened up my room and studied all morning. Mr H came over and him and my brother went to get Steven's minibike for Pam's birthday (Mr H's daughter) (spoiled brat). I wanted to go, but I thought it would look too obvious. My brother told Mr H all kinds of things - I know and it makes me MAD!!! I read my book all afternoon - it's good. It's called "The Lute and the Glove" by Katherine Eyre. She writes good novels. I had to prune the bushes up fronk (ick) but I didn't finish. Then I went to Sue's and watched "Summer Magic" a delicious movie starring Haley Mills (my favorite actress).

October 11
Steven just acted normal and Mr H didn't say anything. I got a C on the English test again, oh well. I'm also getting a B in Geometry. Whew. We don't have to take the Biology test until Wednesday and we're supposed to have a Bookkeeping test tomorrow. Would you believe our volleyball team won today? 4:15 or something like that. They really wiped out. We went to JC Penny's tonight and I got some new deck shoes. They are ugly. I like my old ones a lot better!Well, I can't think of much else to say so I'll close for now - until tomorrow....

October 12
Well, Steven was sick again - oh, well. I'm getting a B in English - because of the terrible grade I got in Literature, I suppose I should try to bring that grade up a little. Mr M taught us Religion because E.W. and his class went on a field trip. We had a test in Bookkeeping - I hope I got a good grade. I had to babysit a bunch of brats after school and everyday after school - 3 boys. I did that until 5:30 and at 6:00 me and Donna went to C.College to play games with Mr H. and Edward. We never did figure them out. With 40 pages of rules - who could? We gave up and Mr H got us some HOT chocolate and then my brother picked us up.

October 13
Steven came to school today. His excuse? His mom wanted him to stay home because he was half asleep when he got up yesterday. I missed 2 on the Drivers Ed test today and I only missed 7 on the Biology test. Donna missed 10 (I got the highest score). I missed 5 on the Bookkeeping test we had yesterday. So I guess I'm not getting too bad of grades. I had to babysit tonight (and all year I guess?) The kids names are Kevin age 10, Keith age 8, and Kenneth age 6. They weren't too bad today. I was a good girl and went to church tonight. Oh yes, Michele got a letter from Bernd (a penpal from East Germany GDR) and he sent a picture of Uwe (my penpal from East Germany - Bernd and Uwe are friends)(what a doll) I'm expecting a letter from him tomorrow.

October 14
Well, I guess I'll tell you what happened today. Mr M was in a horrible mood today. I am in charge of the teachers page for the Annual (School Year Book). I wanted to have the activities (poor me). Steven rode his bike today (because he gets extra points in Biology if he does). We only had half a day of school. I didn't get a letter from Uwe. I had to babysit from 12:30 - 5:30. We mostly played around the school. They were worse today, but I managed somehow. We went shopping tonight and I got a couple of little patch flags (U.S.) to send to Uwe. I hope he likes them.

October 15
Friday - a glorious word to all who hear it (now-days). Say it with love in the heart. My bean plant from the Biology experiment came up (finally). Now I wish something else would grow before I give up. We watched a boring movie in chapel today. I almost fell asleep. Michele came over and ate with me at lunch. In biolab all we did was watch a bunch of movies. I had to babysit again (a routine thing now) and I get paid next Friday. I got a letter from Mike. It was very good, but none from Uwe. There wasn't a meeting at Arvie's tonight because he has to work - so I don't know what will happen.

October 16
Guess who came to church? Steven (I amost fell through the floor). They very seldom come to church twice in a row. Michele came home for dinner and we also had Gary (a friend of my brother's). Me and Michele had to make the dinner. We made Sloppy Joe's and warm cider and rotten watermelon - which we gave to the neighbor's chickens. I didn't get a letter from Uwe again, I better get one on Monday or I will be mad! We went to the cliff by the cemetery and watched the cars go by. Then we had supper. I had 5 (or 6) pieces of french (garlic) bread. At the movie, I had a bag of jelly beans (from Dan) and some gum. Mark and Dan got a Permanent wave (sick). I sat by John E.

October 17
Sunday, ah peaceful day of rest! I slept in until 8:30. I had to water the lawn and finish pruning the bushes, and do my homework and sew up my mom's dress, and feed Timmy - but I didn't because he didn't want to wake up - so I left him to his rest. I read most of the afternoon, some good books. We ate at church - Spaghetti and meatballs with salad drenched in italian dressing - so much the salad wilted & so did I. Afterwards I picked up some prints from Long's and then I went to Mr. H's to watch his color TV (Sue went to Angwin). They kept on bugging me and it made me mad (that's life).

October 18
Well, back to the good ole' school daze (ha, ha!). Nothing unusual happened unless you call the principal being gone unusual. Steven was telling me all his experiences on his mini bike. They were good and his annual summer trip to Los Angeles. He got to go to Magic Mountain - lucky guy. Guess what!!?? I got a letter from Uwe, finally! He sent all kinds of things. I went to babysit - but no boys?? I stayed around there until 6:00 and then they told me that Mrs. C is taking care of them. I'm kinda glad, but I wish they would have told me! I get paid tomorrow. I worked on Bookkeeping all evening and it still doesn't come out right - poor me.

October 19
Steven didn't ride his bike to school today, because he didn't feel like it. I wrote Uwe a big letter and sent him a bunch of things including a dollar bill for his coin collection. Steven kept hitting me with my rubberband right on the buns and it made me sooo mad! It went under my desk and he went to grab it and Cindy and me started calling him "nasty". He turned all red - it was funny. Mr H talked on his favorite subject in Biology - sex and reproduction. It was funny the way he tried to tell about it. After school Michele, me, Ranele and Cindy were listening to my "In a- gadda-da-vida" record (Iron Butterfly) and Michele's mother came over (kill). So now Michele can't come over anymore (sickening).

October 20
Sorry I didn't write today - But I just couldn't think of anything.

October 21
I was in a very good mood and so was acting very crazy. EW was gone and we had a substitute and I was acting up and she thought I was the worst kid in the class. It was funny. I got ink all over Steven's face and he got mad! Ha! Ha! Then we had a war during breaks (with rubber bands). After that we were just "quietly" studying and I hit him just below the eye. He got pretty mad, but not too mad. So now he has to pay me back. OH NO! In P.E. Miss S had the boys play us and only certain people including her could play. It made me sooo MAD. We went shopping in W. tonight and I got a bunch of junk (as usual) Oh yes, We had audio/vision tests again today and I am 4'11" and weight 112 with 20/100, 20/70 vision. 20/20 with glasses. Steven is 5'3"' and weighs 108. I got to weigh him. What a privalege. Der Unde.

October 22
Today was another day for most people, but for me it is Friday. Which I look forward to. I was in a pretty bad mood for awhile. Till break, then we played keep-away. Mr. H. gave the chapel talk on nutrition. It was OK. At lunch we played keep-away almost the whole time. It was real fun (Steven, Ed, Donna, and me) with two guards (Sue & Debra at the doors). The girls won. We also chose class officers. Michele is the President, I am the Vice-President, Donna's the Secretary/Treasurer, Steven is the Pastor (oh no), Mike is Sargaent of Arms and Cheryl is Song Leader. Michele was sick today, but we went to the meeting at Arvie's anyway. It was OK I guess. Except Alice got mad and Michele got sicker and went home.

October 23
Steven's parents were at church today (shock), but Steven wasn't, so I'll have to bawl him out about being a good example (after all he is the pastor of our class). Mark read my tablet during church with all the dumb notes we wrote. I didn't go on singing bands today. I just sat around and read. I read this diary for as far as I've gotten, and then I took a nap. How refreshing, but now I'm not tired and it's 10:45! They had skating tonight and it was an absolute blast. I mean, the boys weren't as shy as they usually are. I skated with Dan, Mark and Kevin. I would have come in 2nd or 3rd in the race, but Mark pushed me - so that was that. Michele and me aren't very good friends any more just because of her mom. She always runs around with Cindy now.

October 24
Let's seee - what did I do today. I got up at 8:30 because I had to water the lawn. Then I did all my homework from 10:00 - 2:30. I cleaned up my room before that. I made some more on my gum wrapper chain, and Mr. H kept coming over every five minutes and it aggravated me. So I took a shower to get rid of him. I went to Sue's to watch TV. The Ice Follies were on instead of Walt Disney it was very good. I sure wish I could get some Ice Skates. In the meantime I'll practice on roller skates. I'm getting pretty good on them. Whoopie! No school tomorrow - so I get to sleep in.

October 25
I didn't get to sleep in very much after all - my mom came in and woke me up. I was sooo Mad! I didn't do too much - just goofed off. I washed my skates with saddle soap and soaked some paper off some tiles for my mom for fifty cents. The paper plugged the drain - I didn't take a shower (nobody knows). I practiced my techniques in skating this afternoon. backwards, going into the spin and coming out of it without falling. I know one thing it made me sick. My dad had me help him fix the brakes on my brother's car because he ran off to San Jose with his friend Mike. I think Ray is living with us (he's been with us for a couple of weeks now)(poor me). My parents wanted me to get my check from the babysitting job - but they weren't home, so I don't know when I'm going to get paid. Oh yes, I got a letter from my cousin David.

October 26
Mr H said I couldn't use Timmy for our yearly project because I want to do it. I'm supposed to do something. I don't know what to do. I was so mad! You wouldn't believe it.

I got a letter from Mike today. It was pretty good. He had a letter enclosed for Steven in it too. I got 89% on the English test, bad, now I have to take it over. We played a dirty trick on Mike today - we took all his books and put them in the empty desk. He got a little mad, but it was funny, so he stole a bunch of my stuff and that made me mad - so we're even. I finally got paid for the babysitting job - they paid me $10, I was only supposed to get $5.75 ( I guess they paid me interest). We started the girls volleyball tournament in P.E. today.

October 27
I got up early today to study my Biology. My watch was off by 10 minutes, so I got up earlier even than that. Mr. M didn't get to the room until after the first bell and everyone was getting impatient. In the meantime, we were talking about Steven (and he was standing right there & I didn't know it) I was so embarassed. I'm glad I didn't say too much. I'm getting a B in Bookkeeping and I don't know why. It makes me mad and a B in Biology. Our group had to give the lecture and quiz today, but we got to watch a movie on drugs first. Today was my dad's birthday and we all had to sing to him. Then Ray and I got into a big fight. I'm reading a murder mystery and it's real good. But I think I'd better hit the sack it's late.

October 28
We took the English test over and I got 98% which is zer gut. Everybody in our room has a nickname, so from now on I'll call them by that. The list will be in the back of this book on the first page of the memoranda. Steven = Highwaters, Ed = Long Johns, Mike = Hoss, Me = Mini Monster, Donna= Kissy, Sue = Greaser, Michele= Hippie, Cindy = Too Little, Cheryl = Too Much, Debbie = Witch.

After school Ranele wanted to sell me her chess set, so I said, "maybe, if you show me how". She did and I like it OK. We had a test in Biology and I missed 23 out of 35 (pretty bad) So I have to take it over. In P.E. we played with the boys a dodge-ball type game. It was ok. We went shopping tonight and I got a cheap magnetic chess set so I can practice, maybe I will buy Ranele's later.

October 29
We finally got the chalk boards in our classroom. and now our rooms are complete. They look good and I like them ok. I wore my best purple dress today because we had to have our pictures taken. Highwaters got some new pants (I new he would) and a beautiful royal blue velour shirt. I think his picture will turn out the best. Highwaters said that Kissy and me were the weirdest people he knows next to Doug (Donna's brother?) and we said that he was weirder than me and Kissy put together. In bookkeeping we had a guest speaker from the Community Hospital, he was ok. I went to some evangelistic meetings at church tonight, with Greaser, because she wanted me to. I didn't get home until 10:30, it's almost 11:00 now so I'll go.

October 30
My mom is sick today, so she didn't go to church and I went to another church and stayed for the potluck. It was ok. After that we went and sang for Mr. B. who is in a resthome. We stayed at Michele's house all afternoon till the "hard times" party at my church. It was pretty good. Hippie, Birdlegs (Ranele's nickname), Greaser and me had to get in the middle (of the group) and recite a poem. It was rather embarassing. After that we just went out and goofed off because the party started getting dead. But we had fun anyway - I had fun all day. Babes (my cat) wants me to put him out, besides it's 10:45.

October 31
The time changed last night, so I got up one hour later than usual. It was very windy, but I had to water the D lawn anyway and they paid me today also. My mom was still a little sick, so guess who had to go to the flea market (my mother had a booth at the flea market) - me right! Sick and I only got $1.50 for just sitting there for 3 hours. I only made $2.00.

Guess what - it's Halloween night and after 5 years, I decided to go trick or treating with Greaser and some little kids. I was a hobo and we got a lot of candy. It was real fun. Greaser is staying over night and we were playing chess, but now we're listening to "The Lone Ranger" on the radio.
